Retired General seeks government support for Ovia Osese festival

A retired military officer, Major-General Erema Akerejola, has called on the Kogi State Government to strengthen support for the annual Ovia Osese Festival, describing it as a vital cultural asset with significant tourism and economic potential.

Speaking on the relevance of the festival at Ogori, Ogori-Magongo local government area of Kogi State, the retired General noted that Ovia Osese has existed for decades as a cherished cultural heritage of the Ogori people, attracting visitors from far and near.

He emphasized that the festival serves not only as a symbol of tradition but also as a major tourism driver capable of boosting the local economy if properly harnessed.

According to him, increased government attention and investment in the festival would enhance its appeal, making it more attractive to tourists and cultural enthusiasts.

Akerejola urged the state government to explore ways of promoting the festival on a larger scale, stressing that doing so would showcase the rich cultural heritage of the community while generating revenue for Ogori, Kogi state, and Nigeria as a whole.

He further noted that with proper planning, improved organization, and strategic promotion, Ovia Osese could become a globally recognized cultural event.

Speaking on what he missed most as he retired from the Army, General Akerejola, said waking up every morning and putting on the khaki is what he  missed the most.

He said, “I must say that the discipline of the military is also something I am beginning to miss because I found out that in the military when you give a well taught out instruction which go through the mail is different from the civilians because your subordinate in the military trust the instruction you are giving to them.

“But in the case of civilian, your subordinate ought to add his  own process. So instruction and discipline are also some things I seriously missed as I retired from the Army”
