Nigerians have been called to adopt urban smart agriculture business in order to produce organic food and revolutionise agriculture.

The call was made by Chief Agbaji Chinedu, of Ezocha Farm Services Ltd, who weekend in Abuja, launched a 10 million yam sack bag challenge to women that attended a practical session on urban smart agriculture business and said Abuja has enough land to feed Nigeria and even the world.

Chief Chinedu called on residents, especially women, to grow their food at home and not depend on farmers. This, he said, would change the narrative and solve the nation’s hunger problem, adding that “with the little space you have you can grow what you eat.”

President, Helpline Social Support Initiative (HSSI), Dr. Jumai Ahmadu, who organised the event in partnership with Ezocha Farm Services Ltd. and Teleosgrande Farms, said the theme is ‘Nutritional Organic Food Security Collective Initiative.

She called on Nigerians to join the challenge to promote nutritional healthy food security, sustainable urban agriculture, and innovative farming techniques using limited space.

An agriculture expert, Francis Danlami, who at the event gave a training lecture on yam sack bag challenge, said amid rising food insecurity in Nigeria, yam farming and its value chain offer a promising investment opportunity, with the potential to generate significant returns.

He said Nigeria is the highest yam producer in the world with over 60% production worldwide and has over 600 species of yam.

Participants, drawn from civil defence women groups, the Federal Ministries of Women Affairs, Education, and Agriculture, as well as other CSOs, were lectured on how value addition also enhances profitability, proper handling practices for cultivating yam in our backyards through quality management.
