The Super Falcons of Nigeria have discovered their path to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after the African qualifying draw held in Cairo earlier today, April 29.
The ceremony at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that Nigeria will face either Sudan or Comoros in the second round of the qualifiers.
As Africa’s top-ranked side and reigning Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champions, the Falcons were seeded and handed a bye into the second round.
Their first fixtures are scheduled for 5 to 13 October 2026 and will be played over two legs, home and away. The winner advances deeper into a demanding campaign that will produce only two African representatives for the women’s football tournament in the United States.
The opening round meeting between Sudan and Comoros is set for 1 to 9 June 2026, with the winner earning the right to meet Nigeria.
The African qualifying draw for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games
The African qualification series will feature 35 teams across five knockout rounds. Several high-profile ties emerged from the draw, including Tunisia against Senegal, Benin versus Mali and Morocco facing Congo. Cameroon will meet Guinea, Zambia will take on Uganda and Côte d’Ivoire will square off with DR Congo.
Nigeria’s Olympic history remains mixed despite their dominance on the continent. The Falcons missed three straight editions between 2012 and 2020 before returning at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, where they exited in the group stage after facing Spain, Japan and Brazil.
Their best Olympic outing remains the quarter-final run at the 2004 Summer Olympics, still the deepest finish by an African women’s side at the Games.
