Whale stranded for weeks, condition worsening
According to reporting by Associated Press, the whale was first spotted in the region on March 3. Since then, it has repeatedly become stuck in shallow areas, showing clear signs of distress, including irregular breathing and very little movement.
Experts say the whale is far from its natural habitat in the Atlantic Ocean and faces long odds of navigating back through the North Sea — a journey of several hundred kilometres.
Why did the whale enter the Baltic Sea?
The reason remains unclear. Marine experts suggest the whale may have strayed while following a shoal of herring or during migration. The Baltic Sea, however, is not suitable for humpback whales due to its low salinity and shallow waters.
The animal has also developed a severe skin condition linked to the water’s low salt content. Rescuers have been applying zinc ointment in an attempt to treat the irritation.

Multiple rescue attempts fail
Authorities and volunteers have tried several methods to save the whale. Efforts included using boats, inflatable equipment and even heavy machinery to refloat it. While these attempts briefly freed the whale, it has not been able to find its way back to deeper waters.
A more complex plan involving air cushions and pontoons was approved by state officials. However, shifting tides and the whale’s movement have made rescue operations difficult.

Public attention and debate grows
Timmy’s situation has sparked intense public interest. Local media have livestreamed the whale’s condition for days, while activists have held protests along the shore calling for stronger intervention.
At the same time, the situation has triggered debate among experts and the public. Some argue that continued rescue attempts may be causing more harm than good.

Marine biologist Thilo Maack told AP that the whale is severely ill and under stress, raising questions about whether intervention should continue.
Safety concerns and restricted access
Due to growing crowds, authorities set up a 500-metre exclusion zone to prevent people from approaching the whale. Police also intervened after a woman attempted to get close to the animal from a boat.
Uncertain outcome
Despite ongoing efforts, the whale’s chances of survival remain uncertain. Experts warn that even if it reaches deeper waters, its weakened state could make recovery unlikely.
For now, rescue teams continue to monitor and guide the whale, as global attention remains fixed on Timmy’s fate.
