Journalist James O’Keefe made the revelation on his social media handle, claiming that Andrew Hugg, a US Chief of Chemical Nuclear Surety, was caught on camera casually revealing sensitive information in a public restaurant to a stranger. Among the claims Hugg allegedly made was that the US was planning to kill Mojtaba Khamenei, the new Supreme Leader of Iran. The video has raised questions over the actions of the US in the ongoing conflict.
A clip shared by O’Keefe reportedly shows snippets of Hugg’s conversation with an undercover journalist, including his acknowledgement that the US may have killed school children in air strikes in Iran, a reference to the Minab attack, where 168 children died on February 28.
US nuclear scientist escorted out of Pentagon?
In the video, Hugg said that the US could assassinate Mojtaba Khamenei if he “doesn’t change his ways”. CNBC TV-18 could not independently verify the claims made in the clip.
Hugg also said that the US was not planning to ‘nuke anybody’. The official also explained how decisions about nuclear strikes are made, adding that officials overseeing the launch are authorised to initiate the strikes even if a ‘Girl Scout’ brings them the order with the correct codes. When asked if the United States could kill more Iranian leaders, Hugg said, “Trump could. I don’t know who, but he might kill the next guy, his (Ali Khamenei’s) son (Mojtaba).”

He also discussed the possibility of the US being behind airstrikes like Minab in Iran. Speaking on the killing of children in missile attacks, Hugg called it a matter of “collateral damage”. “I mean kids always die in war, but you fight, so yeah.” When pressed on the matter, he admitted that while it was not intentional, civilians were killed in such attacks.
Hugg also said that the easiest way to get intelligence was to “send a pretty girl to talk to the guy,” adding about his dinner companion, “I have to resist your eyes.”
The official also claimed that the US is researching chemical nerve agents, adding that a scientist recently passed away after being exposed to a nerve agent. He also alleged that the US still possessed stocks of sarin in Maryland.
As per a 2023 press release by the White House, the US had destroyed its last remaining stockpile of chemical weapons, including sarin. The last sarin nerve agent-filled M55 rocket was destroyed at Kentucky’s Blue Grass Army Depot on July 7.
As of now, Hugg’s LinkedIn page has disappeared from public view.
US-Iran peace talks
The news comes amid US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he would extend the ceasefire with Iran until peace talks have ended. He added that the US would continue its blockade of Iranian ports. A White House official told CNN that in light of Trump’s announcement, Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Islamabad was called off. However, Iranian leaders have pushed back against the claims of talks, with a senior adviser telling CNN that the extension “means nothing”.
