According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has stated that the Labour Party remains open to reconciliation with embattled former National Chairman Julius Abure and his loyalists as the party prepares for future political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.….....
Otti made the remarks on Thursday during the inaugural meeting of the party’s National Working Committee held at the Labour Party national headquarters in Abuja.
His comments come amid ongoing efforts by party leaders to address internal disagreements that have affected the organisation in recent months.
According to the governor, the party is focused on reconciliation and rebuilding unity among members in order to strengthen its structure nationwide.
During the meeting, Otti addressed questions regarding the possibility of Abure and members of the dissolved National Working Committee returning to active participation within the party.
He explained that the Labour Party leadership is currently engaging in efforts aimed at resolving disputes and reintegrating members who had become divided by internal conflicts.
According to him, the disagreements that created tension within the party are gradually being addressed through dialogue and reconciliation processes.
He stated that the party’s doors remain open to individuals willing to work together for the progress and stability of the organisation.
The governor further explained that political parties often experience disagreements, especially during periods involving leadership struggles and organisational restructuring.
However, he stressed that such disagreements should not become permanent obstacles to unity.
According to him, the Labour Party leadership recognises the need to bring members together and avoid actions that could weaken the party before future elections.
Otti stated that the focus of the current leadership is to ensure that the party emerges stronger and more organised after resolving its internal disputes.
He added that reconciliation efforts are already producing positive signs, with discussions continuing among stakeholders across different levels of the party.
Julius Abure had previously served as the National Chairman of the Labour Party and played a prominent role during the party’s activities leading up to the 2023 general elections.
However, internal disagreements within the party later created divisions among members and leaders, leading to disputes over the party’s leadership structure and direction.
These disagreements involved different factions within the organisation, with some groups supporting Abure while others aligned with alternative leadership arrangements.
The disputes generated significant attention within political circles and raised concerns about the party’s unity and future stability.
The inaugural meeting of the National Working Committee chaired by Senator Nenadi Usman is considered part of the party’s efforts to stabilise its internal structure and reposition itself for future political contests.
Party leaders at the meeting reportedly discussed issues relating to organisation, membership, reconciliation, and preparations ahead of future elections.
Political observers believe the ability of the Labour Party to successfully manage its internal differences could play a major role in determining its strength in the years leading to the 2027 elections.
Attention has also remained focused on how the party plans to maintain its support base and expand its political influence across the country.
Otti’s remarks reflected a broader effort by the party leadership to project unity and encourage cooperation among members despite previous disagreements.
According to him, political parties become stronger when they are able to resolve disputes peacefully and reintegrate members who may have felt excluded or dissatisfied.
He stressed that the Labour Party is interested in building a united organisation capable of competing effectively in future elections.
The governor explained that the reconciliation process is not only about individuals but also about strengthening the party’s structure and restoring confidence among supporters and stakeholders.
The Labour Party gained significant national attention during the 2023 election period due to its growing popularity among many Nigerians, especially young voters and urban residents.
Since then, the party has continued to experience both political growth and internal challenges.
Like many political parties in Nigeria, leadership disputes and disagreements over party administration have occasionally created divisions among members.
Analysts say such conflicts are common within political organisations, especially after periods of rapid expansion and increased political relevance.
Political stakeholders have continued to monitor developments within the Labour Party because of its growing role within the opposition space in Nigeria.
Discussions surrounding party unity, leadership stability, and reconciliation are expected to shape the organisation’s preparations ahead of future elections.
Many supporters of the party have repeatedly called for stronger cooperation among leaders in order to avoid divisions that could affect the party’s performance in future contests.
The current reconciliation efforts are therefore being viewed as an important step towards rebuilding internal trust and improving coordination within the organisation.
During the meeting in Abuja, party leaders reportedly emphasised the importance of unity, dialogue, and organisational discipline as the Labour Party continues to strengthen its operations nationwide.
The National Working Committee is expected to oversee party administration and coordinate activities across states in preparation for future political engagements.
Political observers believe the effectiveness of the committee and the success of reconciliation efforts could influence the party’s long-term stability and electoral prospects.
He said, “So we will keep our doors open, even for Abure to return to the party that he has worked for. The disagreement is over. We are now reconciling and reintegrating people to ensure that the party emerges stronger.”
