A Federal High Court in Abuja has reportedly cleared the way for former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election after dismissing a suit challenging his eligibility.
The ruling was delivered on Tuesday by Justice Peter Lifu, who also upheld a ₦20 million fine earlier imposed on lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, the plaintiff in the case.
According to the court, the lawyer lacked the legal standing to file the suit because he failed to show how he personally suffered any harm from Jonathan’s alleged intention to run for office again.
Justice Lifu further ruled that previous judgments from a Federal High Court in Yenagoa and the Court of Appeal had already affirmed that Jonathan remains eligible to contest future presidential elections. He stated that the Abuja court was bound by those earlier decisions.
The judge described the suit as “an abuse of court process” and dismissed it for being frivolous.
In addition to the ₦20 million fine previously imposed, the court reportedly ordered both the plaintiff and the Attorney-General of the Federation to each pay an additional ₦1 million fine.
