Former Governor of Kano State and NDC chieftain, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has stressed the necessity of cross-regional and cross-religious cooperation in Nigerian politics, insisting that no political group can succeed by excluding major segments of the country’s population.…....
Kwankwaso made the remarks in an interview with Trust TV, published on the official YouTube page on Sunday, May 17, 2026, where he addressed concerns surrounding the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance and its viability in a politically divided Nigeria.
The former Kano governor drew on historical precedents, referencing the first and second republic alliances between the North and the Southeast, to argue that such partnerships are not only possible but necessary.
He noted that Nigerians today are less preoccupied with religious and ethnic sentiments than with access to quality governance, education, and economic opportunities.
Kwankwaso was direct in dismissing politicians who exploit religion and ethnicity for electoral gain, describing them as weak and inconsistent actors who shift positions to suit their interests.
“We cannot play politics without Christians. We cannot play politics without the Southeast or the South South or the Southwest,” he said.
He added that Peter Obi remains a widely popular figure across the South and significant parts of northern Nigeria, making the NDC joint ticket a formidable proposition ahead of 2027.
