APGA Primary: When Ebonyi/Ohaukwu constituents vowed to place personality above party label in 2027

There comes a time in a people’s life when differences give way to mutual cooperation; a time when experience necessitates corporate action toward collective self-emancipation and the actualisation of a long-awaited dream, unhindered by sectional or parochial interests. For Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, that moment appears to be crystallising around the 2027 political race.

The 28-ward constituency, spanning Ebonyi and Ohaukwu LGAs, is currently represented by Hon. Eze Nwachukwu Eze. But dissatisfaction with incumbency has created an opening for an alternative centred on Chief Tochukwu Ogalagu, a lawyer and philanthropist, who emerged the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) after the May 28 primary.

Analytically, Ogalagu’s rise reflects three dynamics shaping the constituency’s politics ahead of 2027. First, it signifies the trumping of personality over political party. Despite his switch from APC to APGA after declaring, owing to some experiences, support for Ogalagu has expanded across party lines. The primary, supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and described as peaceful by the returning officer, Joseph Elom, drew supporters from all 28 wards, including members of other parties, united under a single goal.

Secondly, the play out showed track record substituting for office. Constituents cited pre-election interventions as the basis of their backing: employment for over 1,500 youths, payment of WAEC fees for 1,000 students, free medical outreaches, and sustained empowerment for women, youth, the elderly, and the indigent. In a context where many view representation as transactional, Ogalagu’s prior philanthropy functions as political capital.

The event also showed how strategic pragmatism can guide alliances. While seeking APGA’s mandate for the House of Representatives, Ogalagu publicly endorsed Governor Francis Nwifuru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second term, arguing that “party is just a platform” and that progressives must work together. The move signals an effort to de-escalate inter-party conflict and secure broader acceptability in a state where APC controls the governorship.

It further portrays him as a mature politician who has grown beyond party sentiments to recognising performance as key for collaboration.

The confirmation of Chief Onyeoma Kelechi Agbo as APGA’s candidate for Ohaukwu South State Constituency also at the event reinforces the party’s local structure, but the focal point remains Ogalagu’s House of Representatives seat. As APGA National Youth Leader Eze-Oyebuchi Chukwu noted, the task now is to consolidate support across party lines ahead of 2027.

For Ogalagu, the challenge is to convert the goodwill into votes while maintaining the perception of service above politics.

For the constituency, the primary signals a preference for direct accountability to an individual over loyalty to a party label. Whether that preference holds through the general election will depend on APGA’s organisational strength and the incumbent’s response.

Ogalagu is confident that having invested in humanity, a time has come for humanity to pay him. Clinching the house of Representatives seat is a task that must be accomplished by God’s grace and with the people’s support.

Indeed, a people in unity can achieve their collective dream with ease. The Ebonyi/Ohaukwu constituents have the ball in their court.
