A report from Vanguard dated Thursday, May 21, 2026, revealed that Wole Soyinka mentioned he prevented the late human rights defender Beko Ransome-Kuti from trying to assassinate Head of State General Sani Abacha during the struggle for democracy.…....
Soyinka explained he spotted Beko in possession of a unique firearm designed to evade security detection. When he inquired about Beko’s intentions with the weapon, Beko responded that he aimed to use it against Abacha.
Soyinka stated he cautioned Beko that even if he succeeded in his attempt on Abacha’s life, it would ultimately lead to his own death as well. He eventually took the firearm away from Beko.
Soyinka recalled: “Beko claimed, ‘I’m going to use it to kill Abacha.’ I replied, ‘Beko, how do you expect to approach Abacha?’ He answered, ‘I’ll find a way.’ I warned him, ‘Even if you succeed, you know you won’t survive. I have to let you know.’ I disarmed him.”
