Ladipo Johnson, the national publicity secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has resigned his membership of the party.
Johnson announced his resignation in a letter dated May 4, 2026, which was made available on Thursday.
The correspondence was addressed to the chairman of NNPP Ward G1 (Shitta/Ogunlana Ward) in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos state.
In the correspondence, he said his decision takes immediate effect and is driven by the need for a broader political restructuring within the opposition.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), effective immediately,” he stated.
Johnson described his time in the party as a privilege, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve in key roles, including National Auditor and later National Publicity Secretary.
“It has been a distinct honour to serve our party at the highest levels. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have contributed my quota to our collective vision, particularly during my tenure as the National Auditor and, more recently, as the National Publicity Secretary,” he said.
He also thanked members of the party’s National Working Committee for their support during his tenure.
“My time serving on the National Working Committee has been rewarding. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my colleagues on the NWC for their camaraderie and shared dedication,” he added.
Explaining the reason for his exit, Johnson said the current political climate required stronger unity among opposition parties.
“This decision stems from my conviction that the current political climate necessitates a broader national realignment of the opposition. I believe that at this juncture, my political journey must focus on fostering a more unified front to serve the overarching interests of our nation and its citizens,” the letter stated.
Although he did not disclose his next political destination, sources within the NNPP said Johnson is expected to align with former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other Kwankwasiyya figures in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
A party source described his exit as unsurprising, citing his longstanding political ties with Kwankwaso.
“He is obviously going to join Rabiu Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima in the NDC. You know Ladipo has always been a great asset to Kwankwaso in the NNPP,” the source said.
The source added that discussions were ongoing about his possible role in the new political structure, either in national coordination or regional organisation.
The development comes days after former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Kwankwaso reportedly joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja, in what appears to be a widening opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
Obi had earlier said the move was aimed at building “a peaceful political platform devoid of internal crises.”
