Former Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta has announced his retirement from professional football after bringing an end to a career that spanned two decades.
The Spanish defender confirmed on Friday that the recently concluded season would be his last as a professional player.
Azpilicueta began his career with hometown club Osasuna before moving to French side Marseille, where he established himself as one of Europe’s most reliable defenders.
He joined Chelsea in 2012 and went on to spend 11 successful years at Stamford Bridge, becoming club captain and one of the most decorated players in the club’s history.
The defender later returned to Spain to play for Atlético Madrid and Sevilla before deciding to retire.
Azpilicueta also earned 55 caps for Spain and represented his country at multiple FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships.
During his time at Chelsea, he became the first and only player in the club’s history to win every major available trophy.
He made 508 appearances for the London club, ranking sixth on Chelsea’s all-time appearance list, while missing only 12 matches through injury or illness across 11 years.
Known for his versatility, Azpilicueta excelled at right-back, left-back and centre-back under several different managers.
In a lengthy farewell message shared on X, the Spaniard reflected on his journey in football and thanked those who shaped his career.
He said: “Dear football, today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer.
“After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life.
“Being honest, even though I have been preparing myself for this moment, I found it hard to write this letter.”
Azpilicueta said he never imagined the journey football would take him on after kicking a ball as a child in Pamplona.
He said: “I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”
The former Chelsea captain also thanked his former clubs and teammates.
He said: “To my teammates, coaches, and every staff member at all the clubs I’ve been lucky to be part of, thank you for helping me grow as a person and a player every day.
“Wearing the shirts of CA Osasuna, Olympique Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla FC, and representing my country at the biggest stages has been a true privilege.”
Azpilicueta also paid tribute to supporters and his family for standing by him throughout his career.
He said: “To the fans: your passion and support inspired me to give my best every day.
“I hope you saw a player who always gave everything for your colours, with pride and heart.”
Speaking about his family, he added: “Your love and support mean everything to me. I could not have achieved any of this without you on this journey.”
The 35-year-old said football gave him lifelong memories and taught him values including teamwork, sacrifice, humility and respect.
He concluded: “My heart is full of gratitude and memories I will carry with me into whatever comes next.”
