Philile Mkhungo, a domestic worker, supported her son’s education journey, braving social and financial challenges to see him succeed.

Finally, their sacrifices and perseverance bore fruit as the young man, identified as Andile Mkhungo, graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), an achievement his mother described as “a day that the Lord has made”.

How was Andile Mkhungo’s childhood?

The young man was born and raised in a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, but managed to graduate top of his class.

He shared that his dream had always been to graduate with top honours after six years of hard work and perseverance.

“Graduating as one of the top students in the MBChB programme is one of the proudest moments of my life,” he said.

To him, the academic milestone reflected countless hours of studying, personal sacrifices, and unwavering determination to pursue excellence in Medicine.

He acknowledged the role his mother played in his life, noting that she had always been his inspiration.

“I watched her work tirelessly to ensure that I could pursue my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. Growing up in the informal settlements of Umlazi exposed me to many social and economic challenges, but it also became the very motivation that pushed me to work harder. I knew that education would be the key to transforming my family’s circumstances and giving back to the community that raised me,” he shared.

Mkhungo’s passion for helping others was deeply shaped by personal experience.

“Losing my grandmother at a young age due to complications of diabetes had a profound impact on my life. Witnessing how chronic illness can affect families inspired me to pursue Medicine and dedicate my life to caring for patients with similar conditions.”

He revealed that his desire to become a doctor was born after the loss of his grandmother at a young age.

He explained that the elderly woman succumbed to complications related to diabetes, and witnessing how chronic illness affected his family inspired his career choice.

At the moment, Mkhungo is serving as a medical intern at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital — the largest hospital in Southern Africa and one of the largest hospitals in the world.

“Working in such a demanding and dynamic environment has been both humbling and empowering, as it exposes me daily to complex clinical cases and reinforces my commitment to becoming a compassionate and competent physician.”

As he celebrated his academic milestone, Dr Mkhungo had his mother wear his graduation robe as they posed for pictures together.
