A royal biographer, invited into the Oval Office by Donald Trump, has shared what the president said about Prince William and Prince Harry. Robert Hardman was invited to the White House to celebrate the launch of his new book about Queen Elizabeth II as King Charles’ visit to the states came to a close.

Reflecting on the “unbelievable” visit which was heralded by many as a diplomatic success, the president was candid in his views on the monarch’s children. Views were mixed, with the US leader evidently having a preference for Charles’ eldest son. Discussing Prince William, he said: “William, he’ll be a good King, won’t he? He’s very nice. A great guy. I like him.”

However, Mr Trump was less complimentary about his younger brother Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, according to Mr Hardman’s column in the Daily Mail.

After asking if the estranged prince could make a comeback in the Royal Family, Mr Hardman told the president that “any return to the royal fold is looking highly unlikely.”

Mr Trump responded: “Too many things, I guess. That wife of his. Boy, what she’s done to that guy?”

He added: “I guess she got blocked out by William’s wife.

“How’s she doing? She’s so great. She was sick, people said crazy things about her and she was so brave.”

The comments continue a subtle war of words between the prince and president, triggered by comments made by Harry during a visit to Ukraine last month.

Harry delivered a lengthy, impassioned speech at the Kyiv Security Forum, saying he was “not here as a politician” but as “a soldier who understands service” and a “humanitarian”.

In a rare input on global matters, the King’s youngest son turned his attention to the US – although he did not mention Mr Trump by name – urging the “American leadership” to “honour its international treaty obligations” in its “enduring role in global security”.

Harry said: “The United States has a singular role in this story. Not only because of its power, but because when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons, America was part of the assurance that Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders would be respected.

“This is a moment for American leadership, a moment for America, to show that it can honour its international treaty obligations – not out of charity but out of its enduring role in global security and strategic stability.”

Responding to the speech, the US president told reporters: “I know one thing, Prince Harry is not speaking for the UK, that’s for sure. I think I am speaking for the UK more than Prince Harry.”

“But I appreciate his advice very much,” he added.

Mr Trump went on to ask: “How’s he doing? How’s his wife? Please give her my regards.”
