Maros Sefcovic, the European Union’s trade commissioner,
will hold talks with Jamieson Greer, his US counterpart, following President
Donald Trump’s latest tariff hike threat.

According to AFP, the meeting will hold on Tuesday at the
sidelines of a G7 ministerial meeting in Paris.

On Friday Trump announced that he would increase US tariffs
on EU vehicles to 25 percent from this week.

The US president also accused the EU of “failing to comply
with an earlier trade agreement”.

But the EU rejected the claim, insisting it remained
committed to the deal.

Thomas Regnier, EU spokesperson, said talks between both
sides were continuing at different levels and that the European Parliament had
given conditional approval to the EU-US trade pact.

“Since day one, we are implementing the joint statement, and
we’re fully committed to delivering on our shared commitments,” Regnier said.

He noted that under EU procedures, a final version still
needs to be negotiated with member states before implementation.

EU spokesperson said the bloc had kept US “fully informed
throughout the process” and was working to reassure its American counterpart
that progress was ongoing.

While the EU has said it is keeping all options open,
Regnier did not say if the tariffs has taken effect.

“We will not escalate any threats. We focus on the
implementation phase,” he addedA.
