Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the APC gubernatorial primaries, saying the decision was taken in the interest of peace, unity and stability in the state.
Fubara announced his withdrawal in a statement issued on Wednesday, 20 May, 2026, following what he described as extensive consultations with family, friends and associates. He also pledged support for whoever emerges as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Governor said personal ambition must sometimes give way to the collective interest of the people, stressing that “Rivers State is bigger than any individual.”
According to him, the decision was necessary to preserve peace and stability at a critical moment in the state’s political process.
Fubara thanked his supporters for their loyalty, prayers and sacrifices throughout the exercise, acknowledging the disappointment many may feel over his decision.
“To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey, who gave their time, resources, prayers and unwavering hope, I offer my deepest gratitude,” he said.
He disclosed that his silence in recent weeks was deliberate and guided by the higher interest of Rivers State.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace,” the governor stated, adding that he had faced “immense pressures and difficult choices.”
Fubara, however, maintained that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as an act of weakness, fear or surrender.
“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he said.
The Governor also expressed appreciation to the APC for the platform extended to him and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement during the process.
He urged party members and supporters to remain united and committed to the APC, describing the party as “our collective home.”
Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the expiration of his tenure.
