Former Manchester United defender and football pundit Gary Neville has expressed shock over the omission of Cole Palmer from England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad announced by manager Thomas Tuchel.
Speaking after the squad announcement, Neville said he was surprised that one of England’s most creative young players had been left out of the tournament team.
According to him, modern football may be heavily focused on tactics and physical intensity, but creativity remains a vital part of the game.
“Honestly, when I saw Cole Palmer was not included, I was surprised,” Neville said. “Football today has become very tactical, very physical, but England can never lose its creativity and freedom. Cole Palmer gives you something different.”
Neville praised Palmer’s versatility and intelligence on the pitch, insisting that the Chelsea star possesses qualities every top manager should value.

He explained that Palmer can comfortably operate both as a winger and an attacking midfielder, making him an important option in different tactical systems.
“He is one of those players who can play as a winger and a number 10,” Neville added. “Coaches always talk about versatility, intensity and intelligence. Cole Palmer has all of that.”
The former England international also highlighted Palmer’s confidence and bravery with the ball, describing him as a player who never hides during difficult moments in matches.
“When I watch him play, I see personality. He does not hide from the game. He asks for the ball and he tries difficult things,” Neville said.
