Ghana drop Kudus, Ayew from provisional World Cup squad

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has named a 28-man provisional squad for the Black Stars’ final World Cup preparation camp and international friendly against Wales, with Mohammed Kudus and Andre Ayew among the notable absentees.

The Black Stars will begin camping in Cardiff ahead of the June 2 friendly against Wales, their final confirmed game before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz named his largest squad yet as Ghana intensify preparations for the tournament, where they will face Panama, England and Croatia in Group L.

The squad will later be trimmed to a final 26-man list before the World Cup begins.

Kudus was left out because of injury, while veteran forward Andre Ayew was dropped entirely from the provisional squad.

Several players have already started training at Dragon Park, including Jordan Ayew, Gideon Mensah, Alidu Seidu, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Benjamin Asare.

One of the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was the return of Baba Abdul Rahman.

The PAOK left-back returns to the national team for the first time since September 2023 after impressing in the Greek Super League.

Olympique Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah also returned after recovering from the ACL injury that sidelined him for more than a year and forced him to miss 54 matches for club and country.

Rayo Vallecano defender Abdul Mumin was included after completing his own comeback from a long-term ACL injury that kept him out for 13 months.

Saint-Etienne midfielder Augustine Boakye and Rennes defender Alidu Seidu also returned after previous injury setbacks.

Ajax goalkeeper Paul Reverson retained his place after his first invitation for the Mexico friendly last month, with the coaching crew reportedly viewing him as a long-term project.

Ghana are expected to play one more friendly in the United States before opening their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.

The Black Stars will then face England in Boston on June 23 before taking on Croatia in Philadelphia four days later.

The squad also reflects a transition from previous Ghana teams built heavily around senior stars, with Queiroz blending experienced internationals and younger players ahead of the tournament.
