In a recent interview on Trust TV, former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, spoke on political respect, national leadership, and his views on former presidents ahead of the 2027 general elections.…....
During the interview, Amaechi stated, “I have full respect for Jonathan, so I won’t discuss him because he is bigger than me.” He made the remark while responding to questions on the political legacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration.
Amaechi explained that his decision not to comment extensively on Jonathan was rooted in personal respect and recognition of his status as a former head of state. According to him, political differences should not erase respect for individuals who have previously led the country at the highest level.
The former Rivers State governor noted that Nigeria’s democracy is strengthened when political actors maintain civility and restraint in public discourse, especially when discussing past leaders. He argued that constructive engagement, rather than personal criticism, helps preserve institutional dignity.
Amaechi further stated that his political experience has taught him the importance of separating personal relationships from public commentary. He maintained that respect for former leaders contributes to national unity and reduces unnecessary political tension.
He also emphasized that Nigeria’s current challenges require collective effort from both current and former leaders, regardless of political affiliation. According to him, governance and nation-building should always take precedence over partisan disagreements.
Amaechi concluded by reiterating that leadership comes with responsibility, adding that respecting past presidents is part of strengthening democratic culture and encouraging continuity in governance across successive administrations.
