IPOB Declares May 30 Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, Calls for Total Sit-at-Home

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared May 30, 2026, as Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, urging Biafrans across Nigeria and in the diaspora to observe the day with solemn reflection in honour of those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War.

In a statement issued on Friday by IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the annual remembrance as “a sacred covenant between the living and the dead,” insisting that the memories of those who died during the Biafran struggle would never be forgotten.

According to the statement, the day is dedicated to remembering millions of men, women, and children said to have perished during the conflict through starvation, displacement, bombardments, and other wartime hardships.

IPOB said attempts by some individuals and groups to erase or silence discussions surrounding the Biafran experience would not succeed, stressing that the history and sacrifices of the victims remain deeply rooted in the consciousness of the people.

The group stated that the Biafran story remains one of the “most painful chapters in modern African history,” noting that the conflict drew international attention and geopolitical interests while civilians bore the brunt of the war.

“This is not a day for celebration. It is a day for reflection, mourning, gratitude, honour, and memory,” the statement read.

IPOB also linked this year’s remembrance to ongoing debates surrounding the causes of the Nigerian Civil War and questions about justice, accountability, and political restructuring in Nigeria.

The group paid tribute to soldiers, scientists, mothers, civilians, and children who suffered or died during the conflict, saying their sacrifices created a lasting obligation for future generations to preserve their memory.

On behalf of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB called on residents in the South-East and Biafrans worldwide to observe the day peacefully by staying indoors, keeping roads empty, and dedicating the period to prayers and reflection.

The organisation concluded by saying the courage and sacrifices of those who died during the Biafran struggle would continue to inspire future generations.

“We remember. We honour. We shall never forget,” the statement added.
