Iro Indigenes Urge Alake To Install New Monarch, Raise Security Alarm

Residents and core indigenes of Iro Township in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State have called on the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, to urgently facilitate the installation of a new Oniro of Iro, citing a recent court judgment and growing security concerns in the community.

The demand was contained in a letter dated May 21, 2026, jointly signed by the Chairman of Iro Core Indigenes, Alhaji Saliu Wale Bankole, and the Secretary, Comrade Kamorudeen Akindele.

The group said the appeal followed a judgment delivered on May 12, 2026, in Suit No. AB/292/2013 between Prince Kamoru Akindele Adebari and Mr. Najeem Alani Aromaye, among others, which reportedly nullified Aromaye’s position as the Oniro of Iro.

According to the indigenes, the ruling has effectively created a vacancy on the royal stool, necessitating immediate steps to install a new monarch from the Apetu-Mata Ruling House in line with tradition.

They lamented that the throne has been enmeshed in protracted disputes since the demise of the last substantive monarch, Oba Gafari Ogunrinde-Oyero, in 2012, a situation they said has hindered peace and development in the town.

“The installation of a substantive Oniro will restore stability, unity and accelerate development in Iro Township,” the letter read.

Beyond the leadership vacuum, the indigenes raised alarm over what they described as deteriorating security conditions in the area, particularly around the Iro Palace, urging the Alake and the Egba Traditional Council to take immediate action.

“We equally appeal to Your Royal Majesty to ensure adequate security of Iro Palace and the entire Iro Township to safeguard lives and property,” the group stated.

They expressed optimism that swift intervention by the Alake would not only resolve the lingering kingship dispute but also usher in lasting peace and progress in the community.
