A former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to ex–Vice President Namadi Sambo, Umar Sani, has claimed that former President Goodluck Jonathan has already obtained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential nomination form ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sani, a chieftain of the PDP, made the assertion during an interview on Trust TV on Tuesday, amid growing political speculation over Jonathan’s possible return to active partisan politics nearly 12 years after leaving office.
According to him, the former president has not only acquired the form but is also preparing to publicly submit it in due course.
“In politics, what matters is action. If you are interested, there are processes you must follow, one of which is the procurement of nomination forms. He has done that,” Sani said.
Pressed further on whether Jonathan had indeed picked up the form, he responded: “Yes, and in fact, he is about to come and submit the forms publicly.”
His comments come against the backdrop of renewed consultations reportedly being held by Jonathan across political and diplomatic circles, fuelling speculation about a possible presidential comeback on the PDP platform.
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015 after succeeding the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, lost his re-election bid to former President Muhammadu Buhari. Since then, he has largely maintained a low profile in domestic partisan politics, while playing prominent mediation and election observer roles across Africa.
Sani also dismissed the ongoing legal challenge questioning Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the presidency again, insisting that the matter had already been settled by judicial precedent.
He argued that the case pending before Justice Peter Lifu would likely be struck out for lack of jurisdiction when it comes up, adding that only the Supreme Court could revisit any earlier interpretation of Jonathan’s constitutional eligibility.
“We are very confident that the matter will be thrown out because you cannot relitigate something that has already been decided upon,” he said.
The PDP chieftain further suggested that internal dynamics within the opposition party may be contributing to Jonathan’s cautious political posture, even as he maintained that public sentiment remained favourable toward the former president.
“Most Nigerians know him and there is nostalgia about his time in office. At the time he left, many felt the PDP was not performing, but today people can see the difference,” he added.
Jonathan has not publicly declared any intention to contest the 2027 election, nor confirmed any political platform, but recent political movements around him have continued to fuel debate over a possible comeback bid.
