Kano Assembly Lawmaker Dumps APC for NDC After Losing Re-Election Ticket

A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Constituency, Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, has dumped the All Progressives Congress for the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The lawmaker represents Gwale Local Government Area, the hometown of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Mai Rigar Fata was officially welcomed into the NDC on Thursday by former Kano State governor and party leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Maitama residence in Abuja.

Kwankwaso, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Kano politics, described the defections as a major boost to the party’s grassroots support in the state.

The lawmaker was initially elected into the Assembly in 2023 on the platform of Kwankwaso’s former party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, before later defecting alongside Governor Yusuf to the APC.

His latest move followed his inability to secure the APC ticket for another term in the Assembly.

Others who also joined the NDC include former Gwale Local Government Vice Chairman, Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, and Mahadi Isa Umar.

The defections came shortly after a Federal High Court judgment on Thursday reportedly relaxed restrictions earlier imposed by the Independent National Electoral Commission on political defections.

Reacting to the ruling, spokesman of the opposition African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, warned that the APC could soon witness a wave of defections.
