Dorothy Machira Kimani has shared an emotional testimony of resilience, faith and perseverance after finally completing her PhD journey following years marked by personal loss and academic interruptions.

Taking to social media, Dorothy reflected on a six-year academic journey that saw her drop out twice as she battled overwhelming grief following the death of her younger sister.
She described the period as one that drained her emotionally and physically, leaving her struggling to even manage daily life.
Despite the setbacks, she said encouragement from her father and husband played a key role in helping her return to her studies.

Her father, whom she described as deeply proud of her academic ambitions, continually urged her not to give up, alongside the support of her husband, Dr Kimani Kamau.
However, tragedy struck again when her father was diagnosed with cancer shortly after her sister’s death.
As a trained nurse, Dorothy said she understood the seriousness of his condition, even as she held onto hope and faith for what she described as a miracle.
She recalled making a personal promise to God that she would complete her studies for her father.
But after his passing, she said she was devastated, describing how she walked out of class, abandoned her studies temporarily, and even donated her laptop to a homeless shelter as she struggled to cope with grief.
In a deeply personal account, Dorothy said it was a dream in which she saw her late father that marked a turning point in her healing.

In the dream, she said he reassured her that he had “gone home” and was at peace, giving her the strength to return to her studies.

Although still carrying the weight of loss, she returned to her PhD programme and continued the demanding academic journey until completion.
Dorothy dedicated the achievement to her family, describing her husband as her “greatest support system” who stood by her throughout the process, and her children as silent witnesses to her struggles and resilience.
“To my village, I thank you,” she wrote, expressing gratitude to all who supported her along the way, before attributing her success to faith and perseverance.
