A frontline adovcate for the cause of women in Kwara state
Hon. Mopelola AbdulMalik Bashir, has officially obtained her expression of interest and nomination forms to contest for the Asa/Ilorin west federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027.
Her entry into the race under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), is already sending strong political signals across the constituency, setting up what is widely expected to be a defining contest against the incumbent, Hon. Muktar Tolani Shagaya.
Mopelola, a former Commissioner for Women Affairs and former Commissioner for Water Resources, has built a reputation around institutional reform, social development, and inclusive governance.
She was also a key figure in Kwara’s civic and democratic advocacy space, serving as Gender Coordinator of Kwara Must Change, a powerful pro-democracy movement known for shaping civic participation, youth engagement, and gender equity conversations across the state.
The movement was at the forefront of sustained advocacy that contributed to the emergence of the Kwara State Gender Composition Framework/Law, which guarantees a minimum of 35% representation for each gender in political appointments, a landmark policy widely regarded as one of the strongest gender inclusion frameworks in Nigeria’s history.
Beyond policy advocacy, Mopelola’s civic footprint extends to grassroots political empowerment.
Through ‘Kwara Must Change’, she was actively involved in mobilisation efforts that supported the rise of Hon. Rukayat Shittu, Nigeria’s youngest lawmaker, reinforcing her long-standing commitment to youth inclusion and political access.
