Lagos Arrests 931 Over Environmental Offences, Seals 239 Sites In One Year

The Lagos State Government has intensified its crackdown on environmental violations, arresting no fewer than 931 persons for waste-related offences within one year of sustained enforcement operations across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Sunday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, saying the state had significantly strengthened monitoring, enforcement and compliance activities to improve sanitation and environmental standards.

According to him, enforcement teams carried out wide-ranging operations that led to the inspection of 2,251 sites, issuance of 1,711 contravention notices, and sealing of 239 premises found to have violated environmental regulations.

“Through the agency’s enforcement drive, 931 persons were apprehended for waste offences, 2,251 sites inspected, 1,711 contravention notices issued and 239 sites sealed,” Wahab said.

He added that the state also intensified environmental sanitation operations with the evacuation of over 650 tonnes of construction and demolition waste from different parts of Lagos, as part of efforts to reduce indiscriminate dumping and associated public health risks.

“The agency evacuated over 650 tonnes of construction waste and sustained awareness on demolition and disaster waste through stakeholder engagement,” he said.

Wahab further disclosed that the government had expanded its environmental monitoring capacity through the deployment of modern air-quality infrastructure across the state.

He said the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency completed 114 installations of air-quality sensors and rehabilitated pollution abatement facilities to improve data-driven environmental management.

“The agency successfully completed 114 installations of air quality sensors and rehabilitated air pollution abatement facilities across the state,” he added.

He explained that the initiative was aimed at strengthening pollution tracking, improving air quality management, and safeguarding public health in the densely populated state.

The commissioner also revealed that cleaner fish processing technology had been introduced in Ago Egun through improved fish kilns designed to reduce smoke emissions and improve working conditions for local processors.

“In addition, cleaner fish processing technology introduced at Ago Egun reduced smoke emissions, improved air quality and protected the health of local processors,” he said.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, he said, remains committed to stricter environmental compliance, cleaner communities and technology-driven enforcement across Lagos State.
