The Lagos State Government has launched the Lagos Green Kiosk Initiative, a new urban renewal programme projected to generate about N1.28 billion annually while promoting cleaner energy use and improving the appearance of public spaces across the state.
The initiative was unveiled by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Abiodun Oluyinka Olumide, during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the seventh year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
According to Olumide, the project was introduced through the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA) as part of ongoing efforts to improve physical orderliness and create a more structured approach to managing informal commercial spaces in Lagos.
He said the Green Kiosk Initiative is designed to provide a more organised and environmentally sustainable urban environment while encouraging the adoption of renewable energy solutions.
“The Lagos Green Kiosk initiative was introduced to improve physical orderliness, enhance urban aesthetics, promote renewable energy usage and reduce deforestation. The initiative has the potential to generate approximately N1.28 billion annually,” Olumide said.
The commissioner explained that the project aligns with the state government’s broader plan to modernise informal business spaces, reduce dependence on traditional energy sources and create a cleaner urban landscape that meets global sustainability standards.
For a state with thousands of small-scale traders operating in informal spaces, the initiative represents an attempt to combine environmental sustainability with economic value. Beyond improving the visual appeal of commercial corridors, the government expects the project to support cleaner energy adoption while creating a more regulated operating environment for businesses.
Olumide noted that LASISMA has intensified efforts to improve the management of informal urban spaces through data collection, environmental monitoring and collaboration with relevant government agencies.
He said the agency has also developed intervention plans for several strategic locations across the state, including the AIT Powerline High Tension Corridor, New Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge Emerging Space, Agric-Isawo Informal Urban Space, Itamaga-Elepe-Maya Corridor and Ogolonto-Ipakodo Corridor.
According to him, these interventions involve drone mapping, reconnaissance surveys, stakeholder engagement and enforcement activities aimed at preventing encroachment and maintaining physical order within affected areas.
The commissioner added that the Green Kiosk Initiative complements other sustainability-focused projects being implemented by LASISMA, including the introduction of the Hybrid Solar Powered Air Compressor Pumping Machine (HYPAC) for vulcanisers.
He said the technology is expected to reduce air and noise pollution, improve operational efficiency and encourage eco-friendly business practices among roadside operators.
Olumide said the state government remains committed to building a sustainable and climate-resilient city through investments in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and improved urban planning systems.
The Lagos Green Kiosk Initiative is expected to play a key role in that strategy by combining urban renewal, clean energy adoption and revenue generation within the state’s growing informal economy.
