Lekki Residents React as Heavy Rain Triggers Severe Flash Flooding

Lagos influencer Papaya Ex (Abike Halima Raheem) has sparked a fresh round of frustration online after sharing footage of severe flash flooding in a residential area of Lekki around 1pm during the 2026 rainy season.

The video shows water surging inches deep through the neighbourhood, with clogged drains and rapid urban development clearly making the situation worse.

And as expected, Nigerians on social media had a LOT to say.

Many vented their frustration over the glaring irony residents in Lekki are paying as much as 6 million naira yearly for a single bedroom apartment, yet still have to deal with flood water rushing through their streets like a river. The sarcasm in the comment section was unmatched.

Others pointed fingers at poor drainage infrastructure, questioning how luxury estates in one of Lagos’ most expensive areas can still be this vulnerable to rainfall.

On the authorities’ end, drainage improvement works are reportedly being intensified in flooding hotspots like Ikota, and residents are being urged to take personal responsibility by keeping their own drains clear and free of blockages.

The silver lining? These types of flash floods in Lekki typically recede fairly quickly once the rain stops.
