The former minister said the president encouraged him to go ahead with his long-standing ambition, noting that Tinubu expressed support for his political pursuit despite preferring to keep him within his cabinet. Adelabu emphasized that the president’s backing gives him confidence as he begins consultations and mobilization across Oyo State.
He also disclosed that Tinubu is committed to ensuring unity within the party ahead of the governorship race. According to Adelabu, the president is considering a consensus arrangement among aspirants to avoid internal divisions. However, he noted that no specific individual has been endorsed for the ticket at this stage.
Adelabu further stated that the president has outlined an alternative plan should consensus talks fail, signaling the possibility of a more competitive process within the party.
Highlighting his closeness to Tinubu, Adelabu described himself as the most loyal ally of the president in Oyo State, a claim likely to stir reactions among other contenders within the APC.
Quoting the president’s position on the selection process, Adelabu said:
“He said if a consensus fails, he will call for a direct primary. Make no mistake: I am the only true ‘son of Asiwaju’ in Oyo State.”
