Mmabatho Mokoena-Zondi, the Chief Whip of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, has handed herself over to authorities this morning, Thursday to face fraud charges.
She is accused of allegedly obtaining R233,317.99 by instructing four party researchers she had recruited to pay between 50% and 60% of their salaries between August and December 2024. It is further alleged that she claimed the money was needed for legal costs linked to party leader Jacob Zuma.
The matter is also linked to an internal MK Party disciplinary process which reportedly found her guilty of extortion and recommended her dismissal. However, the party did not act on the recommendation, and former spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela previously stated that she had been “cleared” of wrongdoing.
Mokoena-Zondi is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court later today.
