Renowned gospel artist and minister Dunsin Oyekan, fondly called “The Eagle,” has opened up about the emotional ordeal he endured during the burial of his wife, Adedoyin Oyekan, who died on May 18, 2019, leaving him to care for their two children.
Marking six years since her passing, the singer shared a heartfelt video on Instagram on April 30, reflecting on how he coped with the grief and offering insight to others dealing with loss.
In the clip titled “Pain to Purpose,” he recounted one of the most difficult moments of his life the day he laid his wife to rest. Rather than giving in completely to sorrow, he said he made a deliberate decision to turn to worship.
According to him, he brought along his guitar to the burial and began singing, choosing praise in the midst of deep pain. He described how he gathered those present and led them in worship, even as emotions ran high.
“My voice was shaking. God, you are so good that was the song rising from within me. People were crying, I was crying, but I kept singing. I ended with ‘Hallelujah’; that became my song,” he shared.
Oyekan explained that at that moment, he realized he had a choice to either be consumed by grief or rise above it through faith. He chose the latter, turning fully to God when human words of comfort failed to ease his pain.
He also reflected on the depth of his love for his wife, whom he met during their university years, noting that the loss was overwhelming despite the support around him.
“I told myself it was either I sink or I rise, and I chose to worship. When people’s words didn’t reach me anymore, I turned to God and cried out to Him,” he said.
The gospel minister added that out of that painful season came several songs he had yet to release, including one centered on repeatedly declaring the name and goodness of Jesus.
