Senior Pastor of House on the Rock, Paul Adefarasin, has lamented the state of Nigeria, describing the country as “dead and rotten” while calling for God-fearing citizens to rise as agents of national restoration.
Adefarasin made the remarks during a sermon delivered on May 17, titled, “Becoming Who God Says That You Can Be: The Sequel.”
The cleric said Nigeria is blessed with enormous potential but has continued to decline because of poor leadership, weak institutions and lack of purposeful citizens willing to take responsibility for national transformation.
“We have a country that has more potential than 99 per cent of countries on the face of the earth. But it is dying and it has been dying. It is in comatose now and its body is rotten,” he said.
According to him, only the values of the kingdom of God can restore the country, but such restoration would require men and women who are ready to act as agents of change.
“If anybody can resurrect it, it is the kingdom of heaven. But we need agency, system, kingdom citizens, those who would go and do what is impossible,” Adefarasin added.
Speaking on the collapse of the naira, the cleric said Nigeria had not only devalued its currency but also devalued its people, thereby exposing citizens to hardship and exploitation.
“Nigeria is dead. Let us not deceive ourselves. Let me tell you something, once you are counting in naira, you are poor,” he said.
Adefarasin compared the value of the naira in previous decades to its present condition, saying the country’s economic decline had been worsened by poor historical awareness, weak critical thinking and lack of data-driven planning.
“How much is ₦1.4 billion today in dollars? Only $1 million. Do you know what a billion naira was when I was 15, 16? It was $2.8 billion and we are taking it because we live in the now,” he said.
“We didn’t study history. They erased it out of our education system. And we don’t research data to project what our tomorrow will look like. We are not doing the critical thinking.”
The cleric also criticised Christians who enter government for selfish and personal gain rather than service, urging believers to embrace godly wealth creation and leadership as tools for national transformation.
In a related reaction to the country’s worsening condition, Ivy Ifeoma, wife of former P-Square singer Paul Okoye, also expressed frustration over developments in Nigeria.
Taking to social media, the fashion entrepreneur said Nigeria continues to survive only by God’s mercy, adding that the level of wickedness in the country was deeply troubling.
“God please help us. I’m just tired! And everyone’s quiet. What can we even do?” she wrote.
She further stated that the country remains standing only because of divine mercy, saying the “wickedness of men” in Nigeria is enough to attract severe consequences.
Their comments come amid growing public frustration over economic hardship, insecurity, inflation and the falling value of the naira, with many Nigerians increasingly questioning the direction of the country.
