The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reassured Nigerians that there is no cause for panic amid rising concerns about a possible outbreak of the Ebola virus disease, emphasizing that the country is fully prepared to contain the virus if necessary.
Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, May 21, the Head of Health Emergency Preparedness at the NCDC, Biodun Ogunniyi, said Nigeria’s experience in handling past outbreaks has significantly strengthened its response mechanisms.
“There is no need to panic because fear kills more than death itself,” Ogunniyi stated, urging citizens to remain calm while staying informed.
He noted that Nigeria had already tested its emergency response systems during a similar health scare last year, adding that the country is better positioned today to manage any potential outbreak.
Ogunniyi also referenced Nigeria’s widely praised handling of the 2014 Ebola outbreak, during which the virus was successfully contained in less than 70 days, earning international recognition.
The NCDC reiterated its commitment to heightened surveillance, rapid response measures, and public awareness, assuring Nigerians that all necessary steps are in place to safeguard public health.
