Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted consignments of high-potency illicit drugs ingeniously concealed in water purifier machines imported from Europe, as part of a series of coordinated operations across the country.
The agency disclosed that the discovery was made on May 26, 2026, at a courier facility in Lagos, where officers uncovered no fewer than three kilogrammes of ketamine and 199 grammes of MDMA hidden inside the imported appliances shipped from the Netherlands.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the anti-narcotics agency described the seizure as a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on transnational drug trafficking syndicates.
Babafemi said the operation formed part of wider enforcement actions that also led to multiple arrests and significant drug seizures in Kaduna, Niger and Enugu states.
In Kaduna State, NDLEA operatives arrested a couple, Musa Sunday and Mercy Sunday, alongside one Salomi Ezekiel, after raiding a residence in the Gonin Gora area on May 24. During the operation, officers recovered 100 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 1,246 kilogrammes.
On the same day, along the Abuja–Kaduna highway at Jere, operatives intercepted a 30-year-old suspect, Sunusi Musa, found in possession of 380 rounds of 7.62mm military-grade ammunition allegedly being transported to Katsina State. The suspect and the ammunition were subsequently handed over to relevant security authorities for further investigation.
In Niger State, the agency said its operatives, acting on intelligence, stormed a warehouse in Gidan Kukah, Bosso Local Government Area, on May 27, recovering 457 kilogrammes of skunk. A suspect, identified as Godwin Zakka, was later apprehended at his residence in Minna in connection with the seizure.
Similarly, in Enugu State, NDLEA patrol teams intercepted a commercial vehicle along the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway on May 28. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 22,000 tramadol pills, 100 ampoules of pentazocine and 200 grammes of bromazepam. One suspect, James Maigari Wisdom, was arrested in connection with the drugs.
The agency added that its War Against Drug Abuse campaign continues to gather momentum nationwide, with sensitisation lectures conducted in schools and communities across several states, including Cross River, Taraba, Lagos and Anambra.
Reacting to the successes, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended the officers for their resilience and professionalism, urging them to sustain the tempo of operations against drug cartels.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to intensifying efforts aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks and reducing substance abuse across the country.
