Spain will head to the 2026 FIFA World Cup without a Real Madrid player in their squad for the first time in the country’s history after coach Luis de la Fuente unveiled his final list on Monday.
Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal headlines the squad alongside several members of the team that won Euro 2024 last year.
The omission of Real Madrid players marks a major shift from previous tournaments, where the club traditionally supplied key figures for the national team during Spain’s most successful era.
Dean Huijsen was dropped from the squad, while veteran defender Dani Carvajal also missed out after enduring an injury-hit season.
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino returned after recovering from the foot fracture that sidelined him since January.
Merino made his comeback during Arsenal’s final Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Barcelona defender Eric Garcia and Atletico Madrid full-back Marc Pubill were also rewarded with call-ups following impressive campaigns.
Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand was left out.
Spain will also monitor Yamal’s fitness ahead of the tournament after the 18-year-old suffered a hamstring injury with Barcelona in April.
Yamal and Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams were among the standout performers when Spain won Euro 2024, with both players retaining their places in the squad.
