Tragedy struck on Thursday in Umuadara Umulogho community in Obowo LGA of Imo state, where Wendy Achumba, a nursing student was found dead in her off-campus apartment under brutal circumstances.
The deceased, an indigene of Ngwa in Abia State, had completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic studies at the College of Nursing, Umulogho, before her death.
Sources said her body was discovered inside her private residence with multiple machete wounds, suggesting she was violently attacked.
There were indications that the assailant may have attempted to decapitate her.
Confirming the incident, the Imo state police command said it had launched a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement issued by DSP Okoye Henry, the police public relations officer, the command said operatives had visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment shortly after receiving the report.
The statement noted that the victim’s body had been recovered and deposited in a morgue, while efforts were ongoing to track down those behind the attack.
“The command is aware of the tragic incident involving the death of a female student of the College of Nursing, Umulogho, whose body was discovered in her private off-campus apartment,” the statement said.
It added that “an intensive investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and arrest those responsible.”
