Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and his Kano State counterpart, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Sunday formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), receiving their membership cards in Abuja amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The two prominent opposition figures, who recently exited the African Democratic Congress (ADC), were officially welcomed into the party at a closed-door meeting attended by top NDC leaders and supporters who erupted in cheers during the presentation of their membership cards.

The event was anchored by former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, who also serves as the national leader of the party and led the formal reception of the defectors.

Although details of the private meeting were not immediately disclosed, party insiders described the development as a “major political consolidation” within opposition ranks, with expectations that further alignments could follow in the coming weeks.

Obi, a former Labour Party presidential flag bearer in the 2023 elections, and Kwankwaso, a key political figure in northern Nigeria, were seen exchanging pleasantries with party executives shortly before being formally inducted into the NDC fold.

Their defection marks one of the most significant political shifts in recent months, as parties intensify behind-the-scenes consultations and coalition-building efforts ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The NDC leadership has yet to issue a detailed statement on the strategic implications of the high-profile defections, but party sources hinted that more political heavyweights could be unveiled soon.
