‘Only foolish people believe that’: Kwankwaso opens up on working for Tinubu ahead of 2027 election

Former Kano State governor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has denied claims that he is secretly working for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.…....

Kwankwaso, speaking on Global TV on Wednesday night, said some individuals had continued to spread rumours about him since his time in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The allegation was earlier made by Sanusi Bature, spokesperson for Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, who claimed that Kwankwaso was indirectly working for Tinubu’s re-election.

Bature alleged that Kwankwaso worked for Tinubu during the 2023 election and had recently sought a direct meeting with the president, which reportedly did not hold.

Reacting to the claims, Kwankwaso described the allegations as baseless, saying only “foolish people” would believe them.

“I think only foolish people would believe that. We are not working for anybody. We are only working for NDC,” he said.

“Bola Tinubu has been my senior brother and good friend up till now. But that doesn’t mean we shall pull all our political ideologies together with him.

“He is doing his own, and I am doing my own.”

The former Minister of Defence also said the president might not be fully aware of the challenges facing the country because those around him were allegedly shielding him from the reality on ground.

“Normally, under the current circumstances, the president may not see what is happening. And unfortunately, most of the people around him are actually the ones creating the problems,” Kwankwaso said.

“So, in those circumstances, it is difficult to see who will advise him or tell him the obvious situation. What they normally tell and what they are doing is to pick governors. I think going by the number of governors now, APC is number one.”

The NDC leader also spoke about his alliance with Peter Obi in the new political coalition.

Kwankwaso said the decision to support Obi followed careful consultations and political calculations, adding that they considered him the most suitable candidate from southern Nigeria.

He added that the coalition still has enough time before the 2027 general election to reach Nigerians and clarify issues surrounding the rumours being circulated against them.

According to him, the alliance is focused on providing quality leadership and offering Nigerians an alternative to the country’s current challenges.
