Orji Uzor Kalu has emerged winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Abia North Senatorial District.
The serving senator defeated challenger Philip Nto by a wide margin across the five local government areas in the district.
Kalu recorded victories in Ohafia, Arochukwu, Bende, Isuikwuato and Umunneochi during the exercise attended by party stakeholders, delegates and support groups.
The Returning Officer, Chinidom Christian Kano, announced the result on Monday after collating votes from the 57 wards in the senatorial district.
Kano said: “The candidates that stand for this election are two. It’s between Professor Philip Nto and Dr. Oji Uzokalo.”
Kano said a total of 67,854 votes were cast across 57 wards during the exercise.
He said: “Professor Philip Nto, total number of votes recorded for him is 2,103.
“Dr. Oji Uzokalo scored a total of 65,651.”
The returning officer subsequently declared Kalu winner of the primary election.
He said: “With the power vested on me as the returning officer for the Abia North senatorial election, I hereby declare Dr. Oji Uzokalo winner of this election.”
The victory secures his ticket to contest for the Abia North Senatorial seat under the APC in the forthcoming general elections.
