Julius Abure spoke about the events that led to the emergence of Peter Obi as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 general election.…....
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni Tv on May 25, 2026, Abure explained how several aspirants were already seeking the party’s ticket before Obi joined the party.
According to Abure, the Labour Party already had multiple presidential aspirants before Peter Obi’s arrival in 2022. He said the party had about five aspirants preparing for the primaries before Obi eventually joined around May of that year.
Abure also stated that Pat Utomi was one of the most recognised figures among the aspirants. He explained that other aspirants stepped down after seeing Peter Obi’s growing support, while discussions were also held with Utomi before the presidential primaries.
In his words, “Pat Utomi was the most prominent, was the most visible among all the presidential candidates (in LP). All others, seeing Peter Obi, stepped down and so, but we needed to also talk to Pat Utomi to step down for Peter on the day of the presidential primaries. Peter Obi was the one that joined last. He joined us around May 2022, and before that time, we already had five presidential aspirants who wanted to run under the party.”
