PM Modi urges European companies to make 'bold' investments in India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pitched India as a long-term investment and manufacturing hub during a high-level meeting with top European business leaders in Sweden’s Gothenburg on Sunday, May 17, calling for deeper cooperation in sectors ranging from semiconductors and telecom to clean energy and healthcare.

Addressing executives at the European Round Table for Industry (ERT), PM Modi urged European companies to make “bold commitments” to India over the next five years, while promising government support for major projects.

“Can every company here make one new, bold commitment to India? Can we identify flagship projects that will launch in the next five years?” PM Modi said at the high-profile gathering, co-hosted by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
“The Indian government will back every single one of them,” he added.

The meeting comes amid growing economic engagement between India and the European Union, following the conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and new cooperation initiatives in trade, technology and security.

At the gathering in Gothenburg, PM Modi also proposed an annual India-Europe CEO roundtable, sector-specific working groups and an India-focused facilitation mechanism within the ERT to support businesses expanding into the country.

He outlined five priority areas for India-Europe industrial cooperation: digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors, clean energy, infrastructure and mobility, and healthcare and life sciences.

The meeting was attended by representatives from major European firms, including Ericsson, Nokia, ASML, Airbus, Volvo Group, and Shell, among others.
