Policeman Dies in Fatal Third Mainland Bridge Crash

A police officer has lost his life in a tragic road accident on the Third Mainland Bridge inward Iyana Oworo, Lagos.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

According to LASTMA, the crash occurred when a Lexus vehicle with registration number EPE 765 JN collided with a police officer who was riding a Bajaj motorcycle on the bridge. The officer died instantly from the impact.

Bakare-Oki said the driver of the Lexus vehicle later surrendered himself at the Adekunle Police Division shortly after the incident.

Following distress alerts, LASTMA officials worked alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to manage the scene, control traffic, and carry out emergency response operations. Traffic control measures, including cones and safety equipment, were deployed to prevent further accidents while the incident was documented by police operatives.

The affected vehicles were later evacuated, restoring normal traffic flow along the busy bridge corridor.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to drive with caution, obey speed limits, and avoid reckless behaviour on Lagos roads, stressing that adherence to traffic regulations remains key to reducing avoidable deaths and accidents in the state.
