The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday met with one of his major rivals in the party’s presidential primary, former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
The meeting came shortly after Atiku emerged winner of the ADC presidential primary, defeating Amaechi and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen to secure the party’s presidential ticket.
Atiku was declared winner after polling 1,846,370 votes. Amaechi came second with 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen secured 177,120 votes.
Amaechi had rejected the outcome of the exercise even before the official declaration of results, alleging that the process was marred by irregularities, voter disenfranchisement and result manipulation.
Hayatu-Deen also declined to attend the announcement of the results, citing concerns over alleged widespread vote rigging in parts of the country.
However, in his acceptance speech after receiving the ADC presidential flag, Atiku appealed to Amaechi, Hayatu-Deen and other aggrieved members of the party to close ranks ahead of the 2027 general election.
He said there were no winners or losers in the contest, stressing that the party must unite to pursue what he described as the task of rescuing Nigeria’s democracy.
Details of Thursday’s meeting between Atiku and Amaechi were still sketchy as of press time, as neither of them addressed journalists on the outcome of the talks.
Party sources, however, indicated that the meeting may be part of ongoing efforts by Atiku to reconcile aggrieved stakeholders, calm tensions arising from the primary and secure Amaechi’s support ahead of the presidential election.
