… Authorities Raise Alarm Over Rising Use Of Military Gear By Criminal Network

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service have intercepted a luxury passenger bus conveying a large consignment of illicit drugs and military camouflage uniforms along the Sagamu–Ore–Benin Expressway in Ogun State, in an operation that has further exposed growing security vulnerabilities across the South-West.

The interception, carried out in the early hours of Sunday at about 1:30 a.m., led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of prohibited items concealed within an unregistered transport bus tracked from Lagos through multiple checkpoints based on intelligence reports.

The development comes amid renewed security debates triggered by Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, who has announced plans to establish a forest-based security network aimed at flushing out criminals from wooded areas across Yorubaland.

Drugs, Camouflage Hidden In Bus

According to the Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Command, Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, officers discovered a cache of military-style uniforms and narcotics carefully concealed in the vehicle during a thorough search.

Items recovered include 197 pieces of military camouflage trousers and shorts, five complete sets of camouflage uniforms, 32 camouflage inner wears and 32 camouflage tops.

Others are 154 parcels of synthetic Cannabis Indica (Loud) and seven parcels of “Colorado,” both high-grade cannabis strains allegedly hidden to evade detection.

Afeni described the interception as intelligence-driven, noting that the combination of drugs and military regalia represented a serious threat to national security.

“The combination of illicit drugs and military uniforms in one consignment points to a coordinated attempt to undermine national security,” he said, adding that preliminary findings indicated the camouflage uniforms were intended for distribution to unauthorised persons.

NDLEA Takes Over Case

The seized drugs and other exhibits have been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Command, for further investigation and prosecution.

Receiving the items, the NDLEA Commander, Idiroko Special Command, Williams Ekundayo, represented by Deputy Commander Ganiyu Adeyooye, commended the Customs for what he described as a timely interception, assuring that the suspects would be duly prosecuted.

… Security Concerns Over Impersonation, Forest Crimes

Security analysts say the interception reflects a disturbing pattern of convergence between drug trafficking, impersonation of security personnel, and criminal operations along key South-West transport corridors.

The Sagamu–Ore–Benin axis has repeatedly been identified as a strategic route used by criminal networks operating across Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Edo States.

Experts warn that the increasing circulation of military camouflage among civilians could aid kidnappers, armed robbers and other violent groups operating from forested areas and rural settlements.
