The Senate unanimously approved a resolution to withhold senators’ pay during future government shutdowns.

• The measure was introduced by Sen. John Kennedy following the recent 76-day partial government shutdown.

• Kennedy said lawmakers should not keep getting paid while federal employees are furloughed during shutdowns.

• Because of the 27th Amendment, the resolution would only take effect after the next election.
