Senegal in Political Crisis as President Faye Sacks PM Sonko, Dissolves Government

Senegal has been thrown into political uncertainty after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the entire government in a presidential decree broadcast on state television RTS on Friday evening.

The outgoing cabinet will remain in office temporarily until a new Prime Minister and government are appointed.

The decision follows months of growing tension between both longtime allies who rose to power together under the PASTEF movement in 2024. Disagreements reportedly centered on party control, economic policies, IMF negotiations, and political influence ahead of future elections.

Hours before the announcement, Sonko openly contradicted President Faye during a National Assembly session over special political funds, saying the President “made a mistake” and should reconsider.

The political breakup marks a major turning point in Senegal’s leadership and could significantly reshape the country’s political future.
