SHOCKING: Retired Prison Officer Narrates How a Prisoner Escaped Rawlings’ Final Execution at the Last Minute

In a video shared on social media and sighted by GhanaWeb on May 23, 2026, the former officer narrated how a last-minute review of official documents at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison reportedly saved the inmate’s life.…....

According to Abokyie, 19 prisoners had been selected for execution and the relevant documents had allegedly been prepared with presidential approvals authorising the process.

He described the tense atmosphere inside the condemned cells after the inmates were informed of the impending executions, explaining that prisoners awaiting execution often associated any unexpected knock on their doors with the possibility of being taken for execution.

“Because when one is placed in the condemned cells, anytime you hear them knock on your door, you know it is the end of the road for you,” he said.

The retired officer stated that the condemned inmates were later assembled at a reception area where they were asked to provide information about their next of kin while arrangements were made for prayers before the executions.

However, during a final verification of the documents, it was allegedly discovered that one inmate’s execution approval lacked the required presidential signature.

Abokyie said the discrepancy was brought to the attention of a senior officer, who confirmed the omission, leading to the inmate being removed from the execution list.

“I told the senior officer only 18 of these people have the president’s signature by their names. He checked and confirmed it was true, so his life was spared,” he recounted.

He further disclosed that the man who survived the execution later became a pastor following the incident.
