The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 40-year-old man, Akaniyene Eretus, over his alleged involvement in a string of killings and disappearances in Odukpani Local Government Area of the state.
According to police authorities, the suspect, said to be an indigene of Obot Akara, was apprehended following an intelligence-led operation that traced him to a secluded hut allegedly constructed deep inside a forest in the Abanyama area of Ukim Ita Community, Creek Town.
A joint security team comprising police tactical operatives, personnel of the Nigerian Army, community youths, and traditional leaders reportedly stormed the location. Authorities said the suspect attempted to flee and retrieve a weapon after sighting the operatives but was quickly subdued and taken into custody.
During a search of the compound, security personnel reportedly discovered about eight shallow graves. Investigators alleged that some of the remains recovered were headless and that plantain crops had been planted over the burial sites in what appeared to be an attempt to conceal them.
Police further disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing about 30 people who had previously been reported missing within the community. Investigators said he also led authorities to locations where additional bodies were exhumed as part of the ongoing investigation.
According to police, the incident that reportedly triggered the operation occurred on May 26, 2026. Authorities alleged that a 35-year-old woman, identified as Uduak Essien, assisted the suspect and was used to lure victims to the location. However, investigators noted that efforts are still ongoing to verify the claims made during questioning.
The case came to public attention after residents reportedly heard screams during the latest incident and alerted community leaders, who subsequently contacted security agencies. The report led to a coordinated operation that resulted in the arrest of both suspects.
The Cross River State Police Command stated that Eretus and Essien remain in custody while investigations continue into the alleged killings and the discoveries made at the forest hideout.
