Suzana Magufuli passed away on the evening of Monday, May 25, at her home in Chato District in Tanzania’s Geita Region following a long illness, according to family members.

Her death was confirmed by the late president’s daughter, Jesca Magufuli, who spoke to local digital media outlet Ayo TV before later sharing an emotional tribute on social media.

“Our grandmother, Suzana Mussa, passed away at around 7pm at her home in Chato after a long illness. The family will communicate further funeral arrangements. The Lord has given and the Lord has taken away,” Jesca said during the phone interview.
The passing of Suzana Magufuli has sparked an outpouring of grief among many who still remember the influence and legacy of her son, who served as Tanzania’s president from 2015 until his death in March 2021.
In a separate statement shared online, Jesca described the loss as a painful moment for the family and praised her grandmother as a woman whose life touched many people beyond her immediate relatives.
“Siku ya Leo siku ya Juma tatu tarehe 25 May kwa majonzi makubwa na simanzi iliyotanda mioyoni mwetu tunasikitika kuwajulisha ndugu, jamaa na marafiki, na Watanzania wote kwa ujumla kuwa aliyekuwa mama mzazi wa Rais wetu mpendwa Hayati Dkt. John Pombe Magufuli amefariki Dunia,” part of the statement read.
