Residents of Okpella in Edo State, under the umbrella of “Ukhomuyio Concerned Citizens,” have raised serious allegations against BUA Cement, accusing the company of unlawful activities, land dispossession, and neglect of host community welfare.
In a strongly worded statement circulating within the community, the group condemned what it described as “media propaganda” aimed at justifying processes they insisted on being fundamentally flawed. They argued that no amount of public relations effort can correct what they believe to be systemic injustices against the people of Okpella.
The group further linked the current political struggles of some influential figures to what they described as past actions that undermined local traditions and community structures. According to them, these developments serve as a reflection of unresolved grievances within the community.
Beyond political undertones, the statement highlighted pressing socio-economic concerns. The citizens expressed sympathy for victims of insecurity in the area, as well as recently disengaged workers of BUA Cement. They also alleged that lands belonging to individuals and families have been forcefully acquired, with some reportedly resold without due process.
Local contractors, the group claimed, have been sidelined, contributing to rising unemployment and economic hardship in the community. They warned that the situation has worsened living conditions and posed potential health risks to residents of Okpella and surrounding towns and villages.
The statement also called on the Chairman of BUA Group, Rabiu Abdulsamad, to urgently address the concerns of the host community. The group stressed the need for improved infrastructure, noting the absence of good road networks, quality schools, and accessible healthcare facilities in an area rich in natural resources.
Residents questioned what they described as a longstanding paradox: a resource-rich community lacking basic development. “Is it a crime to come from where natural resources are deposited?” the statement asked, underscoring frustrations over perceived neglect.
As tensions simmer, stakeholders say constructive dialogue between the company, government authorities, and community leaders will be crucial in preventing further escalation and ensuring sustainable development in Okpella.
